I was interviewed recently by Designworks’ in-house editorial project Collective magazine, as part of a book project they were publishing in time to launch at the graduating exhibition for this year’s cohort. I’ll let the press release deliver the details, and hopefully I’ll see a few of you on the Gold Coast, Thursday December 12th...
Students of Design¹ is a limited-run, hardcover, full-colour title, which profiles internationally acclaimed studios [and the odd local one] including Studio NEWWORK in New York, Experimental Jetset in Amsterdam, and Mark Gowing Design in Sydney.
Designworks’ head lecturer, and Students of Design¹ creative director, Drew Davies says the project reflects the value of process, which the college emphasises in its training.
“Besides our Graphic Design Diploma graduates sharing the pages of Students of Design¹ with some of the most respected designers in the world—they are actually involved in the physical production of the book,” he says.
“At Designworks we promote a sense of pride and craftsmanship in our students, and in keeping with this spirit we’ve brought in expert local craftsmen to mentor the students in collating, section sewing and binding this unique piece of print.”
The content for the project was created by Designworks’ in-house editorial project, Collective magazine, which profiles the passionate creative community of the Gold Coast.
Collective editor Nolan Giles says the publishing brand was formed to promote the quality education offered by Designworks, and to share a collective passion for the creative industries.
“The aim of Collective is to connect Designworks with the creative community of South East Queensland, with Students of Design¹ we are aiming to connect with the design community across the globe,” he says.
“We have been thrilled to learn about the process, achievements, inspirations and philosophies of some of the planet’s finest design minds and showcase their work on a beautifully crafted canvas.”
Davies adds that whether a practising designer of 50 years, or a junior graphic designer in the first month of training—we all continue to be students of design, and this is reflected in Students of Design¹.
The 96pp book is printed on a K.W. Doggett Grange Offset 120gsm stock, section sewn and perfect bound, featuring a carefully finished black linen cover.
The foreword for Students of Design¹ is crafted by graphic designer Kevin Finn, author of the world-respected journal and ongoing study of graphic design—Open Manifesto.
The book will be available for purchase through the Designworks and Collective websites and a number of selected retailers.
Students of Design¹ will be launched officially at a graduation event at Designworks’ West Burleigh campus on 12th December at 6:30pm. Industry members and interested parties are invited to come along for this special event.
