Switching from a Mac to PC for a job?

They're very similar these days. And in fact, I prefer networking and windows explorer to OSX. Once you get used to hitting the Ctrl key instead of the Cmd key, you'll be right. And finding program settings will probably trip you up. But all pretty minor issues really.

Could just be a quirk with how illustrator is rendering the lines.. If you were to save for web and make a jpeg, does it still look like that?

:: I find it hard to get past the idea that I'd pay the entry fee only to have people dismiss my work because it's not from an agency.::

I wouldn't mind trying out some of these replacements. Already switched to Manga Studio for the majority of my illustration work. And getting real sick of how buggy Illustrator is since I upgraded.

What @Dave said. People are often shocked I don't use a Mac at home. Having the most basic knowledge in how a computer works has always lead to me being branded a "nerd", as if they're not a tool people have been using every day for the last ~20 years.
I've found that my PC crashes a lot less than the Macs I've visited in my freelancing travels. It's personal preference, and like @Kensmith said, the Ctrl / Cmd is the biggest issue you'll find.

Any chance you could convert one of your side projects to this format? It's what I'm hoping to do this year.
Mad respect to you, @Kensmith for the February sketch challenge - I haven't gotten past day one on that yet!

Best price you'll probably find is bannershop.com.au
Don't think they do installs though.
